Caterpillar Binding by a-perplexing-puzzle Caterpillar Binding by a-perplexing-puzzle
I've had such a good response from my coptic binding book that I thought I'd post my caterpillar binding. I really am starting to think about pulling out all my bookbinding stuff again... though I guess that means I'll have to fix my punching cradle :P

This book was done using instructions from Keith Smith's book "Non-Adhesive Binding, Volume 3." Every signature (i.e. group of pages) is encased in paper that I painted with gouache to give the spine that colorful look.

Lovely piece of work. I'm still working on Volume 1 of 'Non-Adhesive Binding', but I'm going to try the Coptic's from Vol 3 for my next series of Journals.

I have seen caterbillar binding before and I think it looks amazing but I don't know how to do it. Do you know of a site or a book were I could get some instructions? Is Non-Adhesive Binding, Volume 3 a good book?

I don't actually own Non-Adhesive Binding--I borrowed it from my teacher--but it seemed like it had some fun stitches when I was flipping through it. The caterpillar instructions in the book look like a beast, but when you trace each thread on the diagram with a different colored marker, you realize it's not so bad :)

If you don't want to buy the book, try googling "caterpillar binding". I found a link to a PDF tutorial on the first page that looked pretty good.

Good luck!

Haha! Yes, some binding look like you will kill yourself by even trying them but when you look a little closer it's actually not as bad as it looks. :D

Thanks for the tip. I'll go and have a look.

And your book looks great.
